What we collect and why
- Server logs (IP address, user agent, requested URL, timestamp) — collected automatically for security and abuse prevention. Legal basis: legitimate interest. Retained for no more than 30 days.
- Newsletter subscriptions (email address) — used solely to send the newsletter you signed up for. Legal basis: consent, which you can withdraw at any time via the unsubscribe link in every email. Retained until you unsubscribe.
- Contact and correction emails (your email address and what you write) — used to handle your enquiry. Legal basis: legitimate interest. Retained for up to 24 months, then deleted.
- News tips — handled confidentially by the editorial desk and not shared outside the newsroom. Source protection takes precedence; see our Tip Us page.
- Analytics — aggregated usage statistics to understand what readers find useful. See our Cookie Policy for details and choices.
What we do not do
- We do not sell or rent personal data to anyone.
- We do not use personal data for automated decision-making or profiling.
- We do not transfer personal data outside the UK/EEA except where a processor provides adequate safeguards.
Processors
We use a small number of service providers (web hosting, email delivery, analytics) acting as processors under contract. They may only process data on our instructions.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to access, rectify, erase and port your personal data, to restrict or object to processing, and to withdraw consent at any time.
